Yarmouth Town Hall sandbagged in 1939 WWII. The Town Hall was initially used as A.R.P. HQ, which then moved to Royal Solent Yacht Club.
A.R.P. consisted of telephonists, wardens, ambulance drivers, First Aiders.
Effie Pitman and Eileen Smith nee Lansdowne manned telephones in the evenings, reporting air raids to NewportHQ. Gerry Sheldon( nee Haward)’s mother drove an ambulance. The laundry van was pressed into servicae as an ambulance.
