The arrival of the Mallyshag on the Green, next to the Sailing Club, marked the start of the Carnival. Escorted by children, he made his way to the waiting President, Brenda Garlick, and handed over the flag to be flown throughout the week.
The afternoon’s sports attracted a good crowd, with announcer Anthony Davies in fine voice, rallying the competitors ready for the Fun Run.
The first event, a Fun Run, over a difficult course of 4 miles, attracted 30 entrants and two dogs. Last year’s winner, Matt Ward, ran in fancy dress, an apple costume.
Whilst the Fun Runners disappeared on the 4 mile course, Field Sports got underway, with plenty of entries for boys and girls races, which were fiercely contested. Carnival Committee members were kept busy at the tape, picking out the winners.
Keeping a watchful eye on the proceedings Yarmouth’s Community Police Officer Catherine Quinn, Mayor Steve Cowley and Sylvia Mence, past Deputy Mayor who retired 2013.
Fun Run winner was Mark Wyldbore in a time of 26 min 13. Al Rowe of ‘Potting Shed Cartoon’ fame, who has drawn maps for the Town’s History Trail, and this website came a worthy second in 26.24, a better time than he achieved last year.
First woman home was Izzy Taylor. Young Charlie Sellars completed a double, as first under 15 home and a short while later, winner of boys sprint race.
