My grandad  Robert  May hired in a television,  a little 12 inch one. Everyone in the family came to his house in Ommanney Road, with piles of sandwiches, and we watched the television all day. It’s what the children remember most – watching the little black and white television. They had a ticket for a free packet of chips from the little fish and chip shop in the bungalow on the corner of South Street opposite Sixpenny Corner. Eileen Smith nee Lansdowne b 1921

Phil Kelsey: Yarmouth School

Going to school of course was only a quick nip down the road for me, from Mill Terrace.  I remember how we used to play football there.  On a Monday as soon as one or two got there, two of us would pick a team of what was there, then we’d start and as each one come into the school they went to one team, and the next one went to the other team.  It finished up with quite a number of players on each side. In the top half, the old toilet was one goal. Phil Kelsey b 1920

I was born in 1, Alvina Cottage in Station Road, then we moved down to Mill Terrace. We were in the one where the passage way went through.  At that time in Mill Terrace there was a lot of children.  There was the Mussells; there were five or six of them, there was Joe – I think he was the youngest one, Ray, Ruby, another gal, and Perce, the eldest one, there was quite a few.  And also there was a big family come to live there, Dicksons from Freshwater; there was about twelve of them kids.  He used to ride about on a tricycle and do a few odd jobs.  We used to try and pinch his tricycle if he left it up on the Common. I was born in Cadnam and came to Island in 1933 and lived at No. 1 Fort Victoria Cottages. Then we moved to No 10 Mill Terrace in 1939, – I’ve still got the rent book.
All 3 girls shared the front bedroom, parents were in the middle and Stuart in the back bedroom. We used to have to throw buckets of water down the toilet. There was no electric in Mill Terrace until after the War and then you were allowed 2 lights – we had a light in the two living rooms.
Daisy Pitman used to take in washing and put it out on the marsh. She couldn’t get it in when it was high tide and us children were told to keep away from it.
