Carnival 2013: Saturday August 17th Parade

Yarmouth’s Townfolk, Thorley residents and visitors alike braved the wind and weather and congregated on the Green ready for the Judging and the Parade.

The afternoon weather worsened from overcast, miserable and blustery, to heavy  rain, so everyone who came deserved an award, especially those who stayed the full course.

Carnival 2013: Saturday August 17th Parade, Yarmouth School entry

Yarmouth School and Pre School sent messages to children, parents and supporters by jungle drums       ( and texts) calling all cavemen and dinosaurs to join their float. Result: Yarmouth School Roxs! and won the David Dockrell Cup and Best in parade. Well done!

We’ve won! Great team work from Yarmouth School and Pre School, children, parents and PTFA.  Kizzy Cowley and Claire Bennett, both parents of children at Yarmouth School, and members of PTFA, co ordinated the entry with Tanya Letchford and Sarah Howell of PTFA.

Viking Isaacs arrived early, but fights broke out amongst their own numbers, so happily the town was not plundered on this occasion. They didn’t seem to use their oars very enthusiastically – perhaps their energy had been taken up in Decorated Dinghies and Harbour Sports.

The Carnival’s own Mallyshag  received an unexpected visit from a rather larger Millishag, looking, we’re told, for Love ( GSOH, own sets of boots, good supply of cabbages required).

Two young gentleman, ‘Fred Perry’ and ‘Andy Murray’, with lady umpire, braved a three hour motor-borne tennis match. Rain did not stop play. We challenge any professionals to play with such panache under such conditions! We salute your stamina, and ball control, chaps.

The retiring ‘Spirit of Yarmouth  Carnival’, Carl Ingram, appeared as Captain Hook with brother Ryan as Peter Pan to celebrate Yarmouth’s literary heritage ( New book last Year, ‘History of Yarmouth’ ; new book this year, ‘Yarmouth and Thorley Voices’ available from Holdings. BUY ONE if you haven’t already!)                                            Maybe Hook’s remarkable wig kept him warm and dry – he stayed the whole course.

Carnival 2013 : Parade Team GB

Sporting achievements were celebrated – Team GB in its entirety, from Dame Ellen, through gymnast Tweddle to a cycling hero who was banished from riding on the float and had to pedal his way. Red, white and blue did their best to cheer up the afternoon.

On the day before the 103rd Carnival parade, Prize Giving on the Green saw Helen Sceales awarded ‘Spirit of Yarmouth Carnival’ for the coming year. The prize is awarded to some one who embodies the best of Carnival – joining in all round, having a caring and helpful disposition, and above all having a really enthusiastic outlook on life. It is a great honour to win the award.

She received her presents and the cup from President Brenda Garlick with mayor, Steve Cowley.

Colin Smith: Harbour, Theo Osborne Smith’s boatyard 1930s

Father had the boatyard that, at that time, came straight on to the water when the tide was up.  There was a lot of sedge and so on, but there was a channel along the

Smith's Boatshed 1970s

Smith’s Boatshed 1970s

first of all, and up to the back of the Institute, the Liberal Club I believe they called it in those days.  Just beyond, the stream ran along to what was the Dump, the beginning of where they used to bring the lorries in and dump off rubbish. Now they’ve covered the whole lot of course.

My grandfather started the yard there as I understand it.   Grandfather’s name was Theo Osborne Smith.  He used to have the name on the sign. His first shed was an old ex army canteen. He bought it and had it re-erected there, and there was another little arched type of building behind as well.  He originally started up at Oxford on the Upper Thames and then moved down, first to Fawley, over at Ashlett Creek. He had a little business there, and then for some reason, I haven’t got a clue why, moved over to Yarmouth.  He specialised in mostly little centre-board type of sailing boats, twenty foot or twenty two thereabouts and so on.  He built one of them, the ‘Menomopote’ it was called, Child of the Ocean. I don’t know where they got that name from.  A very unusual boat, very easy underwater shape and the top sides were paired off and came round into a kind of chine and at midship it came right up to the gunwale (or gunnel) . He was a very advanced designer.  I don’t think my father took it to the same extent.  Colin Smith b 1921

Les Turner: Free Time 1950s

As lads we all made ourselves a go-kart with pram wheels from down on the Dump, timber as well. For making the body we would go down and see Mr Harwood and ask him for some large staples to fix the pram wheel axles to the timber body.  A lot of the time he would give them to us or he would charge us a penny for half a dozen.
In the light evenings a gang of us with our go karts would go up to the fire station, go down over the hill to the old railway sta

tion, through the gate, and if you didn’t steer properly, you’d end up going over the edge of the platform. We’d see how far we could get along the platform, along the old railway bed.  Great fun –  some of the karts had steering wheels.

Sue Russell: Free Time

As there were no holiday homes, the houses were all full of local people so we all knew each other, and you knew you could knock at any door if in trouble.

We used to run along the back of the houses in Mill Road to the Dump, which was where the car park is, by the school, then along by the old wall to the Quay trying not to get our feet wet.

Squeak and I spent a lot of time making camps in Mill Copse but regularly the boys used to find them and wreck them. Sue Russell nee Hayles b 1940
