Carnival 2013 Friday August 16th : Prize Giving on the Green

Late sunshine for the Prize Giving on the Green, with David Langford as Master of ceremonies, and Mayor, Steve Cowley, handing over the prizes. It took both their efforts to find out the name of this bear.

Carnival 2013, Spirit Award Winner  Helen Scales

On the day before the 103rd Carnival parade, Prize Giving on the Green saw Helen Sceales awarded ‘Spirit of Yarmouth Carnival’ for the coming year. The prize is awarded to some one who embodies the best of Carnival – joining in all round, having a caring and helpful disposition, and above all having a really enthusiastic outlook on life. It is a great honour to win the award.

She received her presents and the cup from President Brenda Garlick with mayor, Steve Cowley.

Last year’s ‘Spirit’ Carl Ingram, has offered to deputise if Helen is unable to attend.

The cup was first donated by Sue and David Langford in 1992 as an award for some one aged 13 – 16 who tries hard without the need to win. Sue and David, with their family, are tireless workers and supporters of Yarmouth Carnival.

Susan Hayles, Mary Hayles: Harbour, Sports

My father, Harold Hayles was on the Carnival Committee for many years, so my sisters Mary, Chris and Sally and I were always very involved.
We really looked forward to Carnival Week, as we still do now. Squeak and I practised the pair oared rowing for weeks and we entered all the events. All the money we won was spent at the Fair. Sue Russell nee Hayles b 1940

For passing the 11+ I was bought a dinghy, a proper clinker one. We desperately practised rowing for weeks ready for the harbour sports. The ladies’ race went right out round the buoy off the pier. It was our chance to earn money for when the funfair came. I don’t think I ever tried the greasy pole – it was stuck out from one of the army boats in the harbour and dipped right down at the end. Mary Lord nee Hayles b 1936

Les Turner: Harbour, 1970s

I shall never forget the day we had to deal with a fifty foot sort of Edwardian steam yacht.  Apparently they’d gone out the harbour and something had fallen off – I think it was a clock or the barometer. The husband and wife were having a bloody good old argument about it and they hit the Admiralty buoy out there, and so they comes in screaming and shouting.
We managed to get a line. They got the bow to about here, and of course the tide was  going out and I managed to put a line on there on to the quay.  People with pumps came from everywhere. They even got the Fire Brigade down here.   Poor old Bob Woodford went and got this pump off Vic. He went running down this little slip. Course he forgot the bloody thing ended, and the people on the boat just managed to grab hold the pump before Bob disappeared off the end.

Yarmouth Harbour 1960s

Yarmouth Harbour 1960s

That’s where Cecil Doe, George Weston and Jack Harwood used to keep their sailing dinghies, their Enterprises, GP14s and stuff. We used to go down there lots of times, find a dinghy with an oar, scull up to the top of the quay or up the top of the harbour if there was westerly wind blowing, and either Al or myself would stand up with our jackets wide open, and one of us would steer with the oar while the other one stood with their jacket and sail down the harbour.  Les Turner  b 1944
